Scope and Content Chambered cairn at Midhowe, Rousay, Orkney The chambered cairn at Midhowe is built on low-lying land near the sea, close to a broch. Some of the stones on the outer face are placed at angles to give a decorative effect. It is now housed inside a modern hanger-like building. This is a view of the long rectangular chamber. It is divided into twelve compartments by upright slabs and was originally encased by an oblong cairn. An walkway means that the chamber can be viewed from above as well as from the ground. The chamber had been filled in with rubble, and when excavated the remains of twenty-five people were found. Among these were nine complete skeletons.. Most of the remains were on or under shelves along the E of the chamber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
