Scope and Content Broch and settlement at Wag of Forse, Caithness, Highland Wag of Forse now appears as little more than a pile of stones. The broch was built on top of an earlier settlement and was itself used as a source of stone for two later long houses. There are several other buildings in the area. The view shows the remains of the entrance, with its lintel in place, to the broch. It is one of the few structural features which remains. Beyond the entrance are the remains of a staircase and a gallery. Wag of Forse was excavated between 1939 and 1948. The type of long house seen here is known to archaeologists as a "wag" which may come from a Gaelic word meaning little cave. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
