Scope and Content Plans of Port Glasgow Town Buildings, Inverclyde Port Glasgow Town Buildings replaced an earlier town hall found to be inadequate in 1803. An Act of Parliament was passed to allow a new one to be built but work did not begin until 1813. Funding came from public subscription and the sale of bonds. The cells, altered in 1883-4, were originally on the first-floor of the east block with the jailer's accommodation below. The prison was condemned by a government committee and remodelled with ground-floor cells in 1891. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
