Scope and Content Burnt mound at Liddle, South Ronaldsay, Orkney This burnt mound is at Liddle. It is the remains of a prehistoric cooking area. Stones, heated on a fire, were dropped into the stone tank to make the water in it boil. Meat could then be cooked in the water. The stones then cracked and were discarded. This is a view shows the complete site. The drystone walls of the shelter still stand to about 1 m high. The floor was paved and around the walls are compartments formed by slabs. The structure was probably not roofed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
