Scope and Content Chambered cairn known as Cairnholy II at Cairnholy, Dumfries and Galloway The two chambered cairns at Cairnholy, above Wigtown Bay, are two of the best examples of a chamber of Clyde type. Cairnholy II is the higher of the two and lies to the N. It is built on a knoll. This is a view of the cairn. It is now little more than a rectangular outline though the slab-lined Clyde-type chamber remains. It is divided into two with the inner chamber still retaining its capstone. The entrance is flanked by two uprights. The site was excavated in 1949. Finds from the outer chamber include a leaf-shaped arrowhead, a flint knife and Beaker pottery. The finds are now in the RMS.
