Scope and Content Elevation of Stranraer Town-house, Dumfries and Galloway Stranraer Town-house replaced a ruinous tolbooth on the same site. Lack of funds prevented the rebuilding of the next-door church. Instead an extra 'four or five foots' were added to The town-house steeple. A new town-hall replaced the town-house in 1874. The ground-floor was converted to hold two shops in 1837. Originally there was a ground-floor jail and guard-house with a debtors' room above. These were no longer needed after 1822 when the Castle of St John was opened as a prison. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
