Scope and Content Plans of Town Buildings, Fore Street, Port Glasgow Port Glasgow Town Buildings replaced an earlier town hall found to be inadequate in 1803. An Act of Parliament was passed to allow a new one to be built but work did not begin until 1813. Funding came from public subscription and the sale of bonds. The main front of the building measures 21m in length. The south front is divided into two blocks and measures 29m overall. The building has been altered internally. The cells were originally on the first floor but were moved to the ground floor in 1891. When the town buildings were built they included a 'council chamber, Justices Court House, Prison, Bridewell, and other public accommodation'. From the mid-19th century, there were shops, reading rooms and counting offices in the building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
