Scope and Content Plans of Montrose Town-house, Angus Montrose Town-house was built after a local committee offered to pay for a new assembly room. It replaced a medieval tolbooth which continued to be used as a prison until it was demolished in 1837. The 1819 work was of poor quality. In 1839 the assembly room floor had to be strengthened and the musicians' gallery removed. In 1846, an architect's report criticised the masonry. Costs reached £232 by 1849. Refacing was not completed until 1908. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
