Scope and Content Plans of Maybole Tolbooth, South Ayrshire Maybole Tolbooth was originally one of two tower houses in the burgh. Around 1673 it was bought for use as a tolbooth by the Earl of Cassillis, owner of the other tower house, on behalf of the heritors of Carrick and the burgh council. The 11th Earl of Cassillis contributed to repairs in 1798. The parapet was probably rebuilt around 1812. At this time the court-room was used as a theatre and assembly room. In 1837 it doubled as a cell because the one below was 'a miserable place'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
