Scope and Content Reconstruction of Clackmannan Tolbooth, Clackmannan Clackmannan tolbooth is in late 17th-century style. However, the parliamentary order to build one came in 1592. There was concern because the sheriff had to hold open-air courts at the mercat cross and even keep prisoners in his own house. This is what the tolbooth would have looked like during the 17th century, and until it fell into disrepair in the late 18th century. Only the steeple and the crow-stepped gable survive from the original structure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
