Scope and Content Plan of Clackmannan Tolbooth, Clackmannan Clackmannan tolbooth is in late 17th-century style. However, the parliamentary order to build one came in 1592. There was concern because the sheriff had to hold open-air courts at the mercat cross and even keep prisoners in his own house. The tolbooth was a 'heap of ruins' by 1792. It was abandoned except for its steeple in 1822. Only the steeple and the crow-stepped gable survive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
