Scope and Content Reconstruction of Kirkcudbright Tolbooth (around 1650), Dumfries and Galloway Kirkcudbright Tolbooth was paid for by local landowners and from fines. Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar also loaned £2000 to be repaid from council rents and selling booths in the new tolbooth. It was replaced in 1788 because it was too small. In 1642 the inhabitants 'cheirfullie' agreed to pay for the new steeple. In 1723 fire broke out in the clock-keeper's illegal store of straw, gutting the inside before it was put out by 'men of venturous spirit'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
