Scope and Content Reconstruction of Kirkcudbright Tolbooth (around 1630), Dumfries and Galloway Kirkcudbright Tolbooth was paid for by local landowners and from fines. Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar also loaned £2000 to be repaid from council rents and selling booths in the new tolbooth. It was replaced in 1788 because it was too small. Probably the burgh's third tolbooth, it replaced a converted kirk described as 'decayit and fallin doun'. Until completion, the council rented space for a jail from one of the bailies. The burgh clock and bell remained in the old tolbooth until 1644. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
