Scope and Content Elevation of Kilmaurs Town-house, East Ayrshire (also known as 'The Jougs') Kilmaurs Town-house was probably built in 1709. It definitely existed in 1743 when it was repaired. The steeple was built in 1788-1800. The belfry and spire were rebuilt in 1874 after lightning damage. The forestair leads straight up to the first floor. A set of jougs hangs to the left of the steeple. A butter market used to be held at the rear of the building, next to the mercat cross. Access to the ground-floor prison was from the street. The council-chamber was entered through the base of the steeple and now has a blocked fireplace on its north wall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
