Scope and Content Fort known as Maiden Castle, Fife Maiden Castle is built on an isolated rocky knoll. In prehistoric times this would have probably been surrounded by marshland. Two cup-and-ring-marked stones were found nearby and are now in Falkland Palace. This is an aerial view of the fort. A rampart and a ditch run round the base of the hill There is some evidence for defences higher up. The entrance is on the east side and would have originally had an impressive gateway.
