Scope and Content Fort known as Cow Castle, Lanarkshire Cow Castle is built near the gorge of Culter Water. It is one of the best preserved sites in the area. The layout is partly obscured by a jumble of ramparts due to the several phases of construction. This is an aerial view of the site. The earliest defences consisted of two ramparts and ditches. A quarry to the S provided the building material. The later defences were built within the earlier ones. The fort has three hut circles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
