Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of house 1. It is roughly rectangular with a central hearth, two beds and a dresser all made out of stone slabs. The rear wall, including a window, was reconstructed in the 19th century. There were two cells leading from the room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
