Scope and Content Broch at Burroughston, Shapinsay, Orkney The Broch of Burroughston stands at the NE tip of Shapinsay. The interior was cleared out during the 1860s. The structure has since been partly restored. This is a general view of the broch. It stands close to the coast with its entrance facing the sea. Surrounding the site are the outer defences consisting of a wall, a ditch and a rampart. These may have originally totally encircled the broch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
