Scope and Content Elevation of Edinburgh Old Tolbooth, City of Edinburgh Edinburgh Old Tolbooth occupied the High Street site now marked out by brass studs and a heart-shaped setting of cobblestones. It was built to replace one burnt by the English in 1388 and, after many alterations, demolished in 1817. This elevation by Sime shows the old tolbooth from the High Street. The block to the left probably dates from the 15th-century. The two-storyed extension to the right was used for public executions from 1785. Walter Scott unsuccessfully campaigned to prevent the demolition of the old tolbooth. He later immortalised it in his novel 'Heart of Midlothian'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
