Scope and Content Broch at Midhowe, Rousay, Orkney The Broch of Midhowe on Rousay is built on a small promontory. The outer defences are confined to the landward side. A sea wall was built during the 1930s to put an end to the erosion which had destroyed part of the W side of the site. This is a view of the remains of the broch and the sea-wall. Several outbuildings had been lost before the wall was built. Both the wall and the broch and its associated buildings use local stone. This probably came straight from the shore. Many finds from the site are now in the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, with metalwork, jewellery and a number of bone and stone tools. A Roman bronze ladle was probably acquired through trading or raiding and not by direct contact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
