Scope and Content Broch at Midhowe, Rousay, Orkney The Broch of Midhowe on Rousay is built on a small promontory. The outer defences are confined to the landward side. A sea wall was built during the 1930s to put an end to the erosion which had destroyed part of the W side of the site. This is a view showing the detail of the outer wall. It is built entirely from drystone masonry with larger blocks and slabs of stone. Smaller stones were then used to fill in the gaps. The result is a very well faced wall.
