Scope and Content Broch and Settlement at Wag of Forse, Caithness, Highland Wag of Forse now appears as little more than a pile of stones. The broch was built on top of an earlier settlement and was itself used as a source of stone for two later long houses. There are several other buildings in the area. This is a view of the intramural staircase from the broch. It was built into the space between the walls and would have led to the upper galleries and the upper wooden floors. It is one of the few features of the broch that still remains visible. Wag of Forse was excavated between 1939 and 1948. The type of long house seen here is known to archaeologists as a "wag" which may come from a Gaelic word meaning little cave. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
