Scope and Content Mid 19th century view of Maybole Tolbooth, South Ayrshire Maybole Tolbooth was originally one of two tower houses in the burgh. Around 1673 it was bought for use as a tolbooth by the Earl of Cassillis, owner of the other tower house, on behalf of the heritors of Carrick and the burgh council. This is what the tolbooth looked like before it was extensively altered. The upper stages of the steeple and the third storey of the main block were added shortly after the building was purchased.
