Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar also loaned £2000 to be repaid from council rents and selling booths in the new tolbooth. It was replaced in 1788 because it was too small. The 1646 bell in the steeple was probably the one recorded as having been cast 'in ane mould of four hundreth wecht' from three bells sent to Veere in the Netherlands in 1646.
