Scope and Content Maybole Tolbooth, South Ayrshire Maybole Tolbooth was originally one of two tower houses in the burgh. Around 1673 it was bought for use as a tolbooth by the Earl of Cassillis, owner of the other tower house, on behalf of the heritors of Carrick and the burgh council. The upper stages of the steeple were added shortly after the building was purchased. A third storey was also added to the main block, though this has since vanished. The block to the left was added in 1887 to house a town hall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
