Scope and Content Coupar Angus Steeple, Perth and Kinross Coupar Angus Steeple was probably built on the site of the old prison belonging to the regality of Coupar Angus. This was granted to the ancestors of the Lords of Balmerino in 1607, having previously belonged to the local Cistercian abbey. The steeple has hardly changed since it was built. Courts were probably held on the upper floors. Until the mid 19th century, the ground floor was sometimes used as a prison and a stone wall replaced a wooden partition there in 1828.
