Scope and Content Early 20th-century view of Musselburgh Tolbooth, East Lothian Musselburgh Tolbooth was built to replace one destroyed by English in 1544. Work started around 1572, hindered by the destruction of building materials by servants of two local landowners, and probably finished by 1580, or, according to tradition, 1590. This photograph was taken around the time the ground floor stopped being used as a police station, and shortly after the installation of a new burgh clock by James Ritchie of Edinburgh. The ornate lamps on the stair have since vanished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
