Scope and Content Burial vault inside Montrose Town-house, Angus Montrose Town-house was built after a local committee offered to pay for a new assembly room. It replaced a medieval tolbooth which continued to be used as a prison until it was demolished in 1837. The rear extension of 1819 encroached on a churchyard and so included a burial vault to accommodate existing graves. The 1819 additions were partly funded by the guildry in return for the use of the new second floor. This right was lost after a dispute with the town council in 1838.
