Scope and Content Plans of Edinburgh Old Tolbooth, City of Edinburgh Edinburgh Old Tolbooth occupied the High Street site now marked out by brass studs and a heart-shaped setting of cobblestones. It was built to replace one burnt by the English in 1388 and, after many alterations, demolished in 1817. The first-floor main hall became a day-room for debtors, complete with a pulpit for their chaplain and a tap-room. Above was a felons' room containing stocks and an iron cage. These plans place the High Street at the top of the screen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
