Scope and Content Dun known as Castle Haven at Kirkandrews, Dumfries and Galloway Castle Haven is the only example of a galleried dun in the Dumfries and Galloway area. It is a design more common in Argyll and the Western Isles. Essentially a fortified homestead is was restored to its current state in 1905 by the laird of Knockbrex. The dun is D-shaped in plan. Inside six doors lead to a total of three galleries. Unlike the duns in the W there is no inter-mural stairway. Instead the upper floors were reached by slabs projecting like a stile out of the inner wall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
