Scope and Content Chambered cairn at Quoyness, Sanday, Orkney This chambered cairn is on the Els Ness peninsula on Sanday. The cairn stands on an artificial platform and three phases of the wall building can be seen. These are an inner cairn over the chamber, a revetment and the outer cairn casing. This is a view of the entrance to the cairn. It has been reconstructed and the passage is no longer fully roofed. Only the last 3.5 m is still covered. The passage is quite low and anyone entering the chamber would have had to crawl on hands and knees. The site was poorly excavated during the 19th century. In the main chamber, four of the cells and the cist set into the floor contained burials. Other finds included stone and bone tools similar to those found at the Skara Brae settlement site.
