Scope and Content Settlement at Barnhouse, Orkney This settlement is at Barnhouse, by the S shore of the Loch of Harray. Only the lowest courses of the buildings remain and the buildings appear to have been deliberately demolished. The settlement was partially rebuilt after excavation. This is a view of one of the structures. It is one of the more elaborate house at the settlement which are thought to represent a social or ritual hierarchy. Structures built from stone slabs can be seen within the inner and outer walls. The settlement was in use at the same time as the nearby Stones of Stenness. It is possible that the people of Barnhouse built and used the stone circle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
