Scope and Content Stonehaven Old Tolbooth, Aberdeenshire Stonehaven Old Tolbooth was probably built as a storehouse for the burgh's overlord the Earl Marischal and became a tolbooth because of the 1600 Act of Parliament establishing the sheriff court in the burgh. New County Buildings replaced it in 1767. The jail was probably housed in the ground floor of the main block. Between 1748 and 1749, worship was conducted through its windows by three local Episcopalian clergymen jailed for holding illegal services. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
