Scope and Content Selkirk Court-house, Scottish Borders Selkirk Court-house was built to replace an older town jail after Walter Scott complained that 'the Town Jail was totally insufficient'. The building was funded by the burgh and by public subscription. Three architects competed for the contract. The original 1757 burgh bell is still rung every evening as a curfew bell. The existing clock dates to 1870, around the period when the shop-fronts replaced the arched windows on either side of the entrance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
