Scope and Content View from north-west showing Town House, 32 Low Street, Banff, Aberdeenshire This shows Banff Town House which consists of the tolbooth steeple (right) and the town house itself. The steeple was built in 1764-7 to designs by John Adam and replaced one which has fallen into disrepair. The town house was built by James Reid in 1796. The steeple has four stages with a tapering hexagonal spire topped by a weathervane. Above the entrance doorway is a clock (at the second stage) with a pediment above, and a round-headed louvred opening at the third stage. The three-storeyed, five-bayed town house replaced a 16th-century tolbooth demolished in 1794. When built, it contained a hall, drawing room, Town Council chambers, sheriff clerks' offices and a prison. It now serves solely as offices. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
