Description View of chambered cairn passage from NW.

Scope and Content Chambered cairn at Islesburgh, West Mainland, Shetland This chambered cairn is at Islesburgh, set on the SE slope of the sheltered voe. It is a very fine example of a heel-shaped cairn. A short distance to the W are the remains of a prehistoric house and an enclosure which may be contemporary. This is a view of the entrance passage. It led into a small rectangular chamber which was also lined with slabs of stone. The chamber is only about a metre across and would have originally been higher and had a stone slab for a roof. The site was excavated in 1959 but there were no finds in the chamber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
