Description View of chambered cairn from NW.

Catalogue Number SC 336022

Copy of B 1090 CN

Scope and Content Chambered cairn at Islesburgh, West Mainland, Shetland This chambered cairn is at Islesburgh, set on the SE slope of the sheltered voe. It is a very fine example of a heel-shaped cairn. A short distance to the W are the remains of a prehistoric house and an enclosure which may be contemporary. This is a view of the cairn. The entrance passage led from the centre of the concave facade to the rectangular chamber inside. This would have originally been roofed over by stone slabs, but is now open to the elements. The site was excavated in 1959, but there were no finds in the chamber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
