Scope and Content Rock-cut tomb known as the Dwarfie Stane, Hoy, Orkney The Dwarfie Stane is the only chambered tomb on Hoy. It is also the only rock-cut tomb in Britain, though several other Orcadian tombs are partly cut into bedrock. It is carved out of a large, isolated sandstone block. This is a view of the outside of the tomb. The large boulder just outside the entrance is the original blocking stone. Inside is a small chamber and two side-cells. The Dwarfie Stone was mentioned in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Pirate. Since 1735, several people, some well known, have carved their names in the chamber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
