Scope and Content Rock-cut tomb known as the Dwarfie Stane, Hoy, Orkney The Dwarfie Stane is the only chambered tomb on Hoy. It is also the only rock-cut tomb in Britain, though several other Orcadian tombs are partly cut into bedrock. It is carved out of a large, isolated sandstone block. This is a view of the squared block which would have originally sealed the tomb's entrance passage. The stone was reported as still being in place during the 16th century. The Dwarfie Stone was mentioned in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Pirate. Since 1735, several people, some well known, have carved their names in the chamber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
