Scope and Content Chambered cairn at Monamore, Arran This cairn at Monamore was probably originally trapezoidal in plan, though much of the mound has been removed. The cairn has been excavated several times, most recently in 1961. The most visible features of the cairn are at the SW end. Here are the remains of the forecourt and facade of drystone walling between the uprights. Beyond this is the Clyde-type chamber with characteristic overlapping side panels and three compartments. The chamber was cleared out by Bryce in 1901, but EW MacKie re-excavated the site in 1961. The forecourt and entrance had been blocked after use and contained remains of ritual fires. Bryce recovered some pot sherds and flakes of local stone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
