Scope and Content Haddington Town-house, East Lothian Haddington Town-house was built to replace a tolbooth that was so ruinous that the council had to meet in the local library. It was financed through loans and using public subscriptions. None of the original building by William Adam survives. The west block holding the assembly-room was added in 1788 at the request of 'the gentlemen of the county'. The architect is unknown, but may have been James Burn, a local builder-architect.
