Scope and Content Pittenweem Tolbooth Steeple, Fife Pittenweem Tolbooth Steeple was built as a church tower. It was converted to a prison while the burgh litigated for part of the old priory it had been granted for use as a tolbooth in 1588. It was decorated with flags in honour of Charles II in 1651. The steeple is probably late 16th century with a top stage of between 1725 and 1750, and a weather-cock of 1739. One of two bells has a Swedish inscription dated 1663. The prison, probably on the ground-floor, held alleged witches in 1704. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
