Scope and Content Plaque of St Michael on Dumfries Town-house, Dumfries and Galloway ('Midsteeple') Dumfries Town-house was built to provide much-needed office and prison space. Outcry over the burgh council's mishandling of the funds led to a committee of council and community overseeing the work. The resulting minute book survives. 17th-century carvings of the royal coat of arms of Scotland and of St Michael are built into the south wall. Two 16th century carvings commemorating Herbert Raining and Robert Mackinnell, baillies in the 1570s, were added to the west wall in 1909. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
