Scope and Content View of Forth Bridge under construction, Edinburgh and Fife The Forth Railway Bridge was built in 1882-90 by Sir John Fowler and Benjamin Baker after Thomas Bouch lost the original contract in 1879 when his Tay Bridge collapsed. The massive structure was built in a manner intended to prevent a similar disaster. This view from 1887 shows the bridge under construction. Each arm of the three cantilevers was extended at the same rate so as to maintain the balance of the structure. The approach spans (one visible on the right) are supported on stone piers.
