Scope and Content Station Platform, Gourock Pier Railway Station, Kempock Point, Gourock, Inverclyde (now demolished) Gourock Pier Railway Station, considered to be the most advanced railway pier of its time, was designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, and built in 1889 as a major railway steamer interchange for the Caledonian Railway Company. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the station in 1890. The platform had slim iron columns supporting arched iron girders which, in turn, supported a saw-tooth glass roof. At the junctions of the superstructure were elegant wrought-iron brackets, and Victorian gas lamps hung from the girders. Above the railway line was a wooden valence, in the company's own design and colours, to help protect waiting passengers from the steam, smoke and dirt from the engines. The new station, although designed to cater for the huge number of summer holidaymakers who ventured 'doon the water' by paddle steamer to the seaside resorts of the Firth of Clyde, also offered a high quality, express train service for commuters travelling daily between Gourock and Glasgow which took less than 40 minutes.
