Scope and Content Inner Hall, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire (latterly Seafield Hospital for Sick Children) Seafield, an imposing Italianate villa designed in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow architectural firm of Clarke & Bell, was built for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of the inner hall of the house was taken in 1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This panelled room, dominated by a massive stone Baronial-style fireplace, has a first-floor gallery designed in the style of the Aesthetic Movement. The main staircase, which leads off the hall to the upper floor, is entered though a pair of heavy brocade curtains to the left of the fireplace. The function of the inner hall was usually that of an auxiliary sitting room. The fire was a source of background warmth for the entire house, and the room served as an informal meeting place for conversation, and where the men of the household could smoke in the company of ladies.
