Scope and Content Board Room, British Linen Company Bank, Nos 38-9 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh (now the Bank of Scotland) The head office of the British Linen Company Bank was designed in 1846 in the grandest possible style and on a colossal scale by the architect, David Bryce. The photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1896 on the 150th anniversary of the founding of the bank. The board room, with views overlooking the gardens of St Andrew Square, has oak dado panelling and massive pedimented doorcases opening to the first-floor landing. The plaster panelled walls are designed to contain built-in portraits, and the furnishings include mahogany tables and red leather chairs. The room has been described: 'There is certainly no board room in London with such interior dignity, such an outlook, and very few with such associations'. A portrait by Sir George Reid of Sir Graham Graham Montgomery, deputy governor of the bank from 1850 to 1901, hangs over the fireplace. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
