Scope and Content Bank of Scotland building, No 38-9, east side of St Andrew Square, Edinburgh The stair-hall The Bank of Scotland building was designed by David Bryce in 1846 for the British Linen Bank to replace its former head office at No 37. The building is in the grandest possible style, and built on a colossal scale. A simple entrance hall leads into this palatial stair-hall. The stone stair, with an elaborately scrolled and gilded balustrade, is supported by curved ornamental brackets. The stair-hall leads into the banking hall. The British Linen Company Bank, founded in 1774 from the British Linen Company, became the British Linen Bank in 1906. It disappeared in a merger with the Bank of Scotland in 1971 but the name has recently been revived for its merchant banking division. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
