Scope and Content Chancel, Lansdowne Parish Church, Nos 416-20 Great Western Road, Glasgow Lansdowne Parish Church, a striking Gothic Revival church standing in a prominent position above the east bank of the River Kelvin, was designed by the architect, John Honeyman, and built in 1862-3 for the United Presbyterians. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1913. The chancel, in the shape of a three-sided apse, is lined with decorative oak panelling with intricate traceried detail in the form of little canopies above the fixed seating. The marble communion table, with a variety of coloured marble inlays, was installed under the chancel arch in 1910 as was the panelled pulpit. The oak font (left) probably also dates from this time. The front row of the pews was designed as a stall with carved bench ends and reserved as seating for the elders of the church. Elders, special titles given to senior members of the congregation of the Presbyterian church, had specific responsibilities and functions within the church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
