Scope and Content George Hotel, 19-21 George Street, Edinburgh Early 20th-century interior The George Hotel grew from three plain houses built on the site by John Young in the early 1780s. After various remodellings that provided hotel accommodation, the whole building became a Hotel in 1935. This long elegant entrance vestibule of the hotel with its marble columns, was on the first floor of No 19 George Street. The interior was designed by MacGibbon and Ross. The Hotel, dating from around 1855, initially occupied the upper floors of No 19. The ground-floor was occupied by the Caledonian Insurance Company. In 1935 the hotel bought the whole building and made the entrance to the hotel at ground level. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
